The Shrine (2010) Review
Just LOOK at that cover image! Isn't it cool?! I mean, LOOK AT IT! It's the biggest reason I choose to watch the movie. That mask is just too awesome. (totally going to make one for my collection) I also remember watching the trailers on Horrorbid.com before it came out. The strange European towns folk and the images of a demon where cool, so the instant it came out on Netflix streaming; I had to press play. But the hype did not live up.
A young American backpacker goes missing in the countryside of Europe. A small-town reporter (Carmen) catches wind of it and seeks out to find the truth. Along with her assistant (Sara) and photographer boyfriend (Marcus), they head out to the boys' last known location. There, they are greeted by a small village with occupants who are anything but friendly. They try to 'shoo' away the foreigners, but before they do; Carmen, Sara, and Marucs find a strange fog that just hovers over one part of a neighboring forest. They pretend to leave the village and backpack around to the spot in the forest. Where they find a thick fog hiding a sinister curse.
Well, that's all I really want to say. If your interested in the movie I'd hate to give a way too much. Just like the cover art, there are some really neat images in the movie. Like this one:
And this one:
But unfortunately that's all the movie has going for itself. There's twists you can see coming a mile away. The characters all are so 'flat,' the villagers are more believable than the three main characters. The script just seemed so rushed. There's barley any build up! They go from seeing the curse straight to being sacrificed. No real scare that their being changed into or chased by something. They try to through it in later; but seems too last minute. And, of course, they easily leave it for sequels. Which always pisses me off. They try to make a damn series of movies that would be a great-'one stand.' Like the premise is neat, but I really don't think it could hold up 3 or 4 more movies.
Not too much gore either. An appropriate amount. Some good intestine shots, and (as you can see above) narley looking eye gouging.
All that said, it's not BAD; just another average horror movie. Some neat effects and artistry, but rushed script and boring actors. If there's literally nothing else on your Que, then give it a try. I'm sure some of you will really quiet like it.
For me I give it a 5: MEH. Could of gone really well, but didn't.
